Forgot to Take Medicines… Again!

Does this happen to your grandma or aging mom ever so often? Is she continually forgetting whether she took her drugs already?

If you don't know how to help her manage the medications, you're not alone.  One out of five elderly patients that arrive to a hospital either had forgotten to take their tablets or willingly stopped the dosage. Others took the wrong dose. Some patients even forgot they've taken the medicine and received a second dose.

Likely Scenarios
They feel just fine. Among other reasons, some people neglect taking their medications because they feel they woke up fine and like they don't need their pills for the moment, regardless the dosage the doctor prescribed.

They either forgot or "forgot". Older people usually forget, sometimes "on purpose" and their relatives can't help but worry.

Most of the time, however, your relatives don't really forget nor neglect the medicines. They just can't remember whether they've taken the pills. As they prefer to miss a dosage than risking an overdose, your aging relatives conveniently "forget" taking another pill. After all, they're feeling fine and asking you if you remember is useless, if not embarrassing.

They want more independence. If your grandma insists she'll take the pills later when you remind her of the medication, chances are she's subconsciously or subtly asking for more independence. She's telling you that you're overdoing it and treating her like a child.

You can re-gain control with the following simple, yet proven way to lessen both the probability of a dosage error and your stress levels. And the trick is…

… to make her proud.

If you can make her feel proud of being able to take the medicines on her own, she'll cooperate. Here's how.

• Use a day-by-day pill organizer. There are several options in the market. Some accommodate the pills for the entire week; others even have capacity for the whole month.
• With a small pillbox—which you'll refill once a day—your aging relative will see at a glance if the pill is still there. And, so will you!

We suggest, for example,pocket pill containers which are big enough for a dosage.  Depending on the size, our key ring pill box has a capacity for up to ten pills. She'll be able to have all her pills at hand for the day. You can count the pills every morning before leaving for your job.

Now, expect a different reaction from her if you overdo it again.
