Tips for Organizing Medications At Home

Posted: Wednesday, June 17, 2009

People taking care of sick or elderly relatives may easily feel overwhelmed by the amount of medication they need daily.  Errors are indeed common and, of course, dangerous, leading up to death in many recorded cases.

Organizing medications at home has become an important task, and one that meets many options in the market, allowing people to choose the one that best fits their family's needs.  Besides the pill containers available in many varieties, there are numerous other options that can work as well or even better.

Before establishing a system, consider:

  • The age of the person taking the medicine; can they take it by themselves or need help all the time or partially?
  • The best kind of print for easy reading; does it have to be large?
  • If the patient knows why they have to take the medication, in order to establish if they can take it seriously and consciously.
  • Plan a system that others can understand easily in case you are not present at some point.
  • Make it flexible enough to effortlessly accept schedule or dosage changes without confusing the patient.
  • The proper storage for the medicines; this is vital for their effectiveness.  Select a cool dry place; moisture and heat are medications' worse enemies.  Keep them in their original containers until ready to take or put into pill organizers.

If multiple medicines are necessary, to make the system more user-friendly, link the containers to meals instead of hours.  You can also get an electronic pill container which will beep at the exact hour the medication has to be taken.  Put the medications on a shelf in alphabetical order or according to how frequently they are taken, and make sure your loved one can read the labels and open the containers easily.  The use of color or differently shaped containers is also very helpful to separate medicines.

In case your loved one needs constant assistance in taking the pills, it comes in handy to write down the medication schedule.  Write down a column the name of each medicine with the doses and times written across, for complete clarity.

There is no wrong way to organize medications at home as long as it follows the doctor's instructions and meets the schedules.  Choose one that easily works for you and your lifestyle, and ask for the help and opinions of your loved ones.
