How to Choose Gifts for Elderly People in Your Life

Posted: Saturday, June 13, 2009

The elderly are a very special group in every sense; and that is not less true when talking about gifts to give them on special occasions or just because.  Today, elderly people are very much neglected and underestimated, sometimes diminished down to the category of objects, to get out of the way or keep under control.

The elderly are your grandmothers and grandfathers; amazing people who, at some point, fought to give you a future and, more directly than indirectly, shaped the person you are today.  Thus, pay attention to what you choose as gifts for them. These things may be the most valuable ones you will be giving in your life, so, you better make them count and absolutely special.

  1. The experience contained within that fragile figure that walks slowly and uneasily is priceless, and it is very sad to see nursing homes filled with little men and women that are "planted" in front of a TV set to keep them "entertained".  We see them as incapable beings, not even able to think.  If you were in their place, would you like to be sat down to watch "The Price Is Right" every single afternoon or spend quality time with your grandchildren and family?  The best gifts for elderly people in your life involve time, love, care, respect, and attention.

  2. Don't you think elderly people cherish sharing their legacy with family and friends?  How much does it cost to put together an album of old photographs around which everyone can sit down and listen to your grandmother or grandfather share stories about the days in which those pictures were taken? What effect do you think it will have on the elderly you love?

  3. How many elderly struggle during the day with sorting out numerous pills to swallow in the morning, afternoon, and evening?  How frustrating do you think that is for them?  Isn't it a thoughtful gift to take the time to help them develop an easy system that they can remember, making them feel useful and self-sufficient?  You can even get them beautiful and shiny brass pill containers that will make it easy for them to sort their daily pills, maybe even engrave them with the name of the medicine it is holding, to make it even clearer for them.

  4. Next time you need to make gifts for elderly persons in your life, instead of buying an expensive book which they may not be able to read or a camera they won't know how to use, give them your time and attention.  Help them feel valued and useful, and most of all, listen to them.  If you want to buy them something, then take them with you to the store and let them choose it, they may surprise you with their abilities and tastes.

Never underestimate anyone, least of all elderly people, and even less so if they are a part of your life.  In the end, you will get more out of the experience than they will, because you will be able to live, through them, in times you never witnessed and meet great people you never knew.  And you know the saying, the old days were better!
