Things to Consider When Choosing Graduation Gifts

Graduates, whether they are high school or college graduates, symbolize hope for the future. They are on their way to displaying all their capabilities to make this world a better place, and a way to honor and stimulate their commitment is to give them nice and useful graduation gifts to support them during the study years and first experiences in the "real world".

Although the graduation gift doesn't have to be expensive, it must be valuable for their experience, be helpful for their routines, and encouraging of their efforts.

When choosing a graduation gift, be sensitive to their needs. Think about what they will require during college or at their first job. You can even remember what your years in that same situation were like and get them something that you think would have helped you if you had had it then. Practical and useful graduation gifts may not sound fun and exciting, but in time, they will thank you for giving them something which really worked for them. Think of a planner to organize their work, or a brass or titanium key holder/cash can where they can hide cash in a stylish way and take it with them safely anywhere they go.
Forget about graduation gifts that parents will not approve of. Distracting gifts will not be helpful if they drive the graduate's attention away from where it should be centered. One of the worst gifts in this sense is video games. On the contrary, Cd's with relaxing or instrumental music, or even some classical pieces, are a great option if you believe the graduate will enjoy them. Books are always welcome, even if the book is about a hobby or entertainment; it will convey wisdom and care, and will certainly stimulate the reading habit in the graduate.
Beware of graduation gifts that are too "mature" for a young adult. Any graduation gift you give must be age appropriate. You do not give a graduate a box of cigars or a bottle of expensive scotch. Put yourself in the graduate's shoes and think of their likes as much as of their weaknesses.
Be careful when giving very expensive graduation gifts. Even if you have the money for it, expensive gifts can give a sense of unreality to a young person. They are at the stage where they have to find out how to earn things and work for them. A young person may lose the impulse to create and envision if they know they can get everything they want, and more, the easy way. If they are meant to become rich, that's great! But do not interfere with them getting there on their own and by their own means.
